Why your dog pulls harder the more you pull back (and the harness switch owners say changed their walks)

Rated 4.9/5 from 682 customer reviews

If walkies leave your shoulder sore or your back aching, your dog isn't being naughty. Often it's just where the lead is attached.

A dog pulling ahead on a lead compared with a dog walking calmly in a front-clip harness

You clip the lead on, open the door and you're off. Not at a stroll, but at whatever speed your dog decides. Your arm is stretched out in front of you, your shoulder takes every lunge, and by the time you reach the park you're more tired than they are.

Lots of owners tell us the same thing: they love their dog, but they've started to dread walks.

AMAZING! My Labrador is super strong and actually tore my rotator cuff. This harness and lead is actually magic. Clipped it on and it just works? No pulling? Gobsmacked. Cannot recommend enough!!! Tried so many other harnesses which ‘sort of worked’ but then put this one on and it actually worked!!!

Why pulling back doesn't work

Many dogs naturally lean into pressure. When the lead goes tight, they push forward against it, and the harder you pull back, the harder they lean in. Every walk turns into a tug of war that neither of you enjoys.

A standard harness with the lead clipped on the back can make pulling easier for them, not harder. The lead sits behind their shoulders, so your dog can put their whole chest into it, a bit like a sled dog.

The chest ring turns pulling sideways instead of forwards.

This is Casper, he is 2 year old. He used to pull like a train on a back harness & now he is like a different dog.
Everything you said about the harness & lead were right, wish I had known sooner.
Thank you for changing our walks, we will definitely recommend your product to other owners.
Thank you Simon, Jane & Casper.

What we made

The Luvly Jubbly No Pull Harness has a lead ring on the chest for guidance and one on the back for relaxed walks, so you can use whichever suits the moment. It has soft padding and breathable mesh, adjustable straps, a secure buckle and a handy top handle.

It isn't magic, and it doesn't replace training. Pair it with rewards for calm steps and short loose-lead practice. But it changes the angle of every pull, which gives that training a much better chance.

I was reluctant at first to buy a new lead as I’d never heard of the brand, but in desperation, needing a lead where my dog wouldn’t pull because I’ve hurt my back, I decided to buy this lead and harness.

What an amazing product — absolutely brilliant. I honestly couldn’t recommend it enough. I actually laughed the first time I put him on the lead because he went to pull, as he usually would, and nothing happened! You would think he was a highly trained beagle now.

I’ve already recommended it to a couple of people and they’ve got their orders on the way. Thanks for making my walking time so much easier.

We rescued a large German Shepherd who had zero lead control and I couldnt walk him myself at all due to the pulling. I used this today and have walked 2 large dogs on my own! He can't pull hard. Its an absolute game changer! plus he looks fab in it. Thank you!

Getting the size right

Fit matters more than anything. Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your dog's ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug but not tight: you should fit two fingers underneath. If your dog is between sizes, size up.

Not sure? The size finder on the product page suggests a starting size from your dog's breed.

Clip, check… and off for walkies.
