Front-clip harness, headcollar or back-clip harness: which is best for a dog that pulls?

Rated 4.9/5 from 682 customer reviews

There's no single right answer for every dog. Here's an honest look at the three options most owners consider, what each one is good at, and where each falls short.

Front-clip harness

The lead clips to a ring on the chest, so pulling turns your dog to the side instead of forwards.

Good for
Dogs that pull, lunge or lean into the lead, when you want guidance without anything on their face.
Watch out for
It works best alongside training, and it needs measuring and fitting properly.

Headcollar

A strap around the nose and behind the ears steers the head, and the body follows.

Good for
Strong pullers, when you want a lot of control over where the head goes.
Watch out for
Many dogs need time and treats to accept something on their face, and some keep pawing at it.

Standard back-clip harness

The lead clips between the shoulder blades.

Good for
Dogs that already walk nicely, and relaxed, sniffy walks.
Watch out for
If your dog pulls, a back clip lets them put their whole chest into it.

Headcollars and back-clip harnesses vary by brand. This table describes typical designs, not any specific product.

5 reasons owners of pullers are switching from back-clip harnesses

  1. It changes the angle of every pull

With the lead on the chest, leaning forwards turns your dog back towards you instead of getting them further ahead.

  2. Nothing on their face

You get guidance from the front without a strap over the nose, which suits dogs that won't settle in a headcollar.

  3. Two rings, two kinds of walk

Use the chest ring for busy streets and the back ring for relaxed sniffs in the park.

  4. Walks that feel easier on you

Several of our customers came to us after hurting their back or shoulder on walks. Read what they say below.

  5. 40 days to try it properly

If the fit, colour or result isn't right, contact us within 40 days of ordering and return the harness for a full refund of the price you paid for it.

This is Casper, he is 2 year old. He used to pull like a train on a back harness & now he is like a different dog.
Everything you said about the harness & lead were right, wish I had known sooner.
Thank you for changing our walks, we will definitely recommend your product to other owners.
Thank you Simon, Jane & Casper.

AMAZING! My Labrador is super strong and actually tore my rotator cuff. This harness and lead is actually magic. Clipped it on and it just works? No pulling? Gobsmacked. Cannot recommend enough!!! Tried so many other harnesses which ‘sort of worked’ but then put this one on and it actually worked!!!

After being a little skeptical about purchasing this harness, I cannot believe how good this product is.
It is extremely well made and works perfectly. No more pulling and my dog just walks by my side on his way to the park.
Previously he would be trying to get to the park in double quick time.
This harness I could highly recommend.

Little questions. Luvly answers.

Will this actually stop my dog pulling?

The front clip helps redirect pulling. Pair it with rewards for calmer, loose-lead walks.

What's the difference between the front clip and back clip?

Front clip for guidance. Back clip for relaxed walks. Both are included.

Do I still need to train my dog?

Yes. Reward calm steps and practise short, loose-lead walks. The harness helps you guide them.

What if it doesn't fit my dog?

Measure the widest part of the chest and check our size guide. Our 40-day guarantee covers the wrong fit.
